Cybersecurity Careers in 2026

Cybersecurity has a persistent talent shortage: over 3.5 million unfilled positions globally. Every company with a network needs someone defending it, and the attack surface grows with every SaaS tool, API, and remote worker. Entry-level roles exist, certifications matter more than degrees, and the salary ceiling is high.

Entry paths

How People Get Into Cybersecurity

  • IT Support / Help Desk to SOC Analyst

The most common entry path. IT support builds troubleshooting instincts and network fundamentals. Add CompTIA Security+ and you are qualified for Tier 1 SOC analyst roles monitoring alerts and triaging incidents. Most SOC analysts started here.

  • Certification-First (Career Changers)

CompTIA Security+ is the standard entry certification. Study time is 2-4 months. Pair it with hands-on labs (TryHackMe, HackTheBox) and a home lab, and you can land entry-level security roles without prior IT experience. Military veterans and career changers use this path heavily.

  • Software Engineering to Security Engineering

Developers who understand how applications are built can specialize in application security (AppSec). Code review, threat modeling, and secure SDLC are in heavy demand. This path commands the highest salaries because it requires both coding and security expertise.

  • Compliance / Audit to GRC

Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC) roles need people who understand frameworks like SOC 2, ISO 27001, and NIST. If you have audit or compliance experience from finance, healthcare, or government, the transition is 2-4 months with the right certification (CISA or CRISC).

Companies Hiring in Cybersecurity

CrowdStrike, Palo Alto Networks, Fortinet, Zscaler, SentinelOne, Mandiant (Google Cloud), Rapid7, and Tenable lead the pure-play security market. Every Fortune 500 company also has an internal security team. Government agencies (NSA, CISA, DoD) hire at scale with clearance premiums of 15-25%.
